Biography
Teemu Halmkrona is a Finnish composer, musician and music teacher living in Helsinki, Finland. He has studied music at Sibelius Academy, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia, Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory and Central Ostrobothnia Conservatory. He graduated from Sibelius Academy in 2021 with major in music theory studies. He made his teacher studies at Metropolia University in 2013 and graduated from the Helsinki Polytechnic in 2006 with major in Jazz Composition. He has participated in UMO Jazz Orchestra’s composition class for young composers in 2005 and Kungliga Musikhögskolan’s class “Composition for Jazz Orchestra” in spring 2014. The latter was organised in co-operation with Norrbotten Big Band.
Halmkrona was selected for the finals of "Esko Linnavalli Big Band Composition Competition" in 2011 with composition Vankikarkuri. He won the second prize in the same competition in 2013 with composition The Parting of the Ways. He won the first prize in "Scrivere in Jazz" composition contest with the same composition at Sassari, Italy in 2014. He performed his first composition concert in 2006 and latest Otteita elämästä in January 2013. He won the second prize again in Linnavalli competition in 2015 with composition An Evening At River. He was again selected for the finals of Linnavalli Competition in 2019 with composition No Mercy! Recently his work Seasons of Siuntio was chosen to be played at final concert of Siuntio soi -composition contest in fall 2021.
Halmkrona has composed and arranged music for theatre and animation films and his music has been played by, e.g., UMO Jazz Orchestra (FI), Norrbotten Big Band (SE), Associazione Blue Note Orchestra (IT) and Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra (AU). Halmkrona's ambient band “Siniaalto” has published four full length albums and one 7” vinyl single since 2003.
He has worked as a pianist and keyboardist since 1994 and as a music teacher since 2006.
